T Ranganathan Clinical Research Foundation popularly known as TTK
Hospital was established in the year 1980. It is a voluntary, non-governmental
organization dedicated to prevention of addiction and rehabilitation
of addicts and their families.

About
the center
|
|
|
In
a 65 bed treatment and rehabilitation complex, holistic treatment
is provided. So far, more than 12,000 patients and family members
have benefited.
|
|
|
Runs
an After Care Centre accommodating 20 drug dependent patients and
providing long-term support for them.
|
|
|
Has
initiated an innovative treatment approach - `the camp approach'
taking treatment, as it were, to the door-steps of villagers.
Through these camps, 1870 patients have received treatment in
the last 12 years.
|
|
|
Initiated
a vocational training unit to teach tailoring and computer education
to drug addicts and their families.
|
|
|
Initiated
a programme to reduce the spread of HIV in a community where IV
drug use is highly prevalent.
|
|
|
Organises
training programmes for several target groups like teachers, students,
psychologists, counsellors, doctors, nurses and supervisors to create
awareness and to empower them to deal with addiction.
|
|
|
Developed
manuals, kits, booklets and pamphlets for fellow professionals,
patients, their family members and general public and make information
on addiction easily accessible.
|
|
|
Collaborating
with many international agencies like UNODC, WHO, ILO, European
Commission and Colombo Plan in undertaking specific projects and
placing the institution in the international map.

Professional
Expertise
At
the center, more than 56 committed professionals are involved
in handling the complex problem of addiction.. The team includes
a consultant psychiatrist, physicians, nurses, social workers,
psychologists, recovering addicts as resident counselors, community
workers, administrative and other supporting staff.
To remain
updated in professional practice, continuous in house staff development
programmes are conducted. Specialists of international repute
from various institutions in allied fields are invited to deliver
lectures. A number of staff members have presented research papers
and participated in international conferences in the UK, USA,
Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Hong Kong.

We have developed
a manual on `Minimum Standards of Care' to be followed by NGOs
to improve the quality of work in the area of addiction. This
document has been accepted by the NGOs as well as the Ministry
of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.

Six programmes
were conducted in north-eastern states in 2000-2001 benefiting
143 professionals. The duration of programmes was from two to
six days.
In the four
training programmes organized by NISD at Delhi, Dr. Shanthi Ranganathan
was a resource person, conducting 2-3 days programmes in 2000-2001,
benefiting 96 participants.
38 functionaries of de-addiction centers were placed at the TTK
Hospital for field placement in 2000-2002 in 7 programmes of one
month duration.
