Imphal, Manipur is one of the eight RRTCs based in the Northeast
zone, covering Manipur and Assam. The organization has addressed
substance abuse interlinked with sexual health related problem of
drug users. Since 1990s, the organization has been working in the
field of Drug Demand Reduction running a rehabilitation centre having
a separate unit for training, de-addiction, rehabilitation and Counselling.
Besides, the organization has also implemented many innovative interventions
like community based vocational rehabilitation, after care/follow
up, spiritual teachings, facilitating formation of self-help group,
organizing camps for ex-drugs during festivals, sensitizing the
community on the issue as well as capacitating the individual as
well as family at large to dealt drug abuse problem, etc.
Under E-41, the organization has conducted a Situation Assessment
on Drug Use and HIV in the Imphal Valley to improve the quality
of service provided by the De-addiction and rehabilitation Centre
and energize Community Level groups to take drug demand reduction
work in more sustained way. The Organization has capacitated many
agencies to develop a resource pool at local/state/ regional level.
Under RRTC, the organization has capacitated service providers under
five day and one month training course sponsored by National Institute
of Social Defence. (NISD). The RRTC sensitizes on community participation
and community resources mobilization. The RRTC has advocated and
network with different agencies including Social Welfare Department,
State AIDS Control Societies, Narcotics Affair of Border, Non Governmental
Organisations (NGOs) and Self Help Groups (SHGs).
The RRTC at present has collaborated with 26 Nongovernmental
Organisations working under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,
12 Government Agencies, 14 CBOs, 7 SHGs, 13 Community Leaders on
account of trainings, situation assessment study, joint coordination,
their views & ideas about the prevention and intervention logic
of drug abused in the state etc.
Under the E-41project, the organization has launched peer approach
attaching 20 trained peers (10F, 10 M) at 9 different NGOs located
in Manipur. The impact of this project is that self help group has
initiated and emerged, both for recovery addicts as well as spouses
of injecting drug users (IDUs). Till date, 734 (451F, 283 M) clients
have received information on safer practices, 204 has counseled
and 397 get referral services, in which 21 to DOT programme, 114
to health care services, 48 to VCTC, 86 to DDRC, 85 to SHG, 16 to
Vocational Training and 27 to other services.
Two Drop-in- Centre has opened up for recovery addicts as
well as the spouses of IDUs where they could spend quality time
through recreational activities, gained group support to maintain
recovery, establish rapport with health care personnel through health
check up programme and vocational rehabilitation to be productive
in life.
